Chimney Inspection ProcessDuring a chimney inspection Ryan conducts observations to the solid fuel burning system and evaluates based on code compliance. During the chimney inspection, the readily accessbile system components will be looked at for how they are installed as well as their condition.
We generally book up to 1.5 hrs on site and what is looked at (room with appliance, roof, attic, other) will depend on the system, ease of access, roof conditions, safety and time. If you would like more time, please let us know at the time of booking so that we can ensure there is enough time scheduled to accomodate the service(s) you desire. Professional Chimney Service - Advanced WETT CertificationsWhile on site, our team will answer any questions and help educate you on solid fuel appliances, fire safety and general wood burning tips and practice.

A WETT inspection is a chimney inspection conducted under WETT's inspection guidelines by a WETT Certified individual and is defined by the WETT Levels of Inspection.

Chimney Inspection for Home Insurance Agent
WETT Inspections may be requested by an insurance agent or when a WETT Inspection is recommended or desired. Check with your insurance agent to see what type of chimney inspection they require to evaluate your solid fuel appliance and chimney for compliance.
Chimney Inspection Service - Visual (Level 1) Basic Inspection
A level one chimney inspection is conducted with observations from readily accessible areas only. This is a basic level of inspection intended for units that have had regular service, no changes or reported issues and the history is known, and to comply with section 2.6.1.4. of the Fire Code, annual chimney inspection requirements.

Chimney Inspection Service - Technical (Level 2) Comprehensive Inspection
A level 2 chimney inspection is recommended for clients that don't know the service history, if the installation was done correctly, during a home sale or property transfer, or where regular service or inspections has not been conducted. A level 2 chimney inspection is more a comprehensive inspection and is much more thorough than a level one inspection. In addition to everything in a level 1 inspection, the accessible areas of the wood burning system will be evaluated from the roof line, as well as a video flue scan to observe the inner wall of the chimney flue in greater detail. The person conducting the inspection is required to have more training than a Basic Inspector.
Invasive Inspection - Add-on Service
When there areas of the fireplace or chimney that are concealed, and are suspect of damage or hazardous conditions, invasive means to observe the concealed spaces may be required. Some examples of an invasive level 2 inspection add-on service may include; Open up a wall, remove a metal cover that is fastened, disconnect components to open up an area, move equipment, the appliance or venting, demolition of a structure, component or equipment.
Chimney Inspection Service - Level 3 Concealed Spaces
Level 3 chimney inspections are generally conducted to gain access to concealed spaces, system components to inspect areas that are suspect of damage, distortion erosion, decay and evaluate for compliance. A level 3 inspection is usually a level 2 comprehensive inspection + opening up a specific area or wall to gain access. In definition, a full level 3 inspection would literally involve dismantleing all the components, walls, the use of x-ray equipment etc.
Chimney inspections with the use of a chimney scanning, video camera is a useful add-on component to a level 1 chimney inspection . The chimney inspection video recording equipment is utilized to observe the interior of the chimney flue in greater detail. It is especially good at locating damaged or cracked chimney linings, bulges, misaligned inner linings, blocked passages, obstructions or other hazards, defects and damages that would otherwise go undetected.
Canadian Chimney Technicians can inspect hard to reach areas such as in an attic or a crawl space where the chimney passes through. This add-on, inspection service can provide important information about chimney and flue clearances from combustible materials that might otherwise remain undetected.
Roof-top Chimney Observations | Steep Roof Access
In most cases, we try to access as many roofs and areas as possible that is feasable in the time scheduled for your service. Roofs with a slope of 6/12 or steeper (steep roof), we will likely need more time scheduled so we can set-up and take down our safety equipment. If you have a steep roof or difficult to access roof and chimney, please let us know in advance.
Types of Wood Burning Appliances We Inspect
Factory Built Fireplace, Stove or Insert Evaluation Inspection
The inspection process and codes and standards used will be dictated by the type of wood-burning appliance being inspected. For an accurate inspection of a factory built appliance, an original manufacturers manual must be present at the time of inspection. All factory built wood-burning appliances sold in Canada must be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturers installation requirements. A listed fireplace or insert will have a listing plate on the unit that indicates the appliance manufacturer, model, testing facility and sometimes clearance requirements. Units without a listing plate or a listing plate that is not visible will be deemed unrated and will be inspected as such. The Fire Code, CSA \ ULC Standards, CSA B-365 may also be referenced during all wood-burning chimney inspections. Level 1,2 and 3 inspections define the extent that a factory built unit is inspected.
Masonry Fireplace Evaluation Inspection (Site Built)
Masonry fireplaces and chimneys are inspected for compliance using relevant Building Codes, Fire Codes and the CSA-B365 Installation Code for Solid Fuel Burning Appliances . Level 1,2 and 3 inspection standards define the extent that a masonry chimney is inspected.
