Considerations Prior Wood Stove Installations
Prior to purchassing a woodburning stove, several factors should be considered to determine the most suitable location, and type of stove to install. Where, and how the wood stove and venting system is installed will affect the systems performance, suitability, cost of installation, room space, ease of transporting wood, outdoor combustion air supply.
If you've already purchassed a stove elsewhere, we recommend booking a site consultation with us so we can evaluate the wood burning stove, verify certification, the manufacturers installation instructions (manual), other documents, determine a suitable design / method to install the stove, stove pipe, chimney and over the installation details together. Once we determine the installation variables, and actions required for a code compliant installation, we can move forward with a suitable plan to install your wood burning stove.
System Performance
The quality of your chimney and stove pipe and how it is installed will dictate the system performance. In general, a wood burning stove will function best with a venting system installed inside the building envelope without any bends. A warm chimney draws better, and produces less creosote. A chimney without bends (elbows, offsets) has less resistance, and therefore the flow is least restrictive. The air pressure plenum in your home, and if the stove will sit above or below this plenum may effect the system performance. It's also very important to install the stove, flue pipe and chimney in strict accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions, and maintain the operation and service requirements.
SpaceA stove that is sized appropriately for the space it will be heating.
The amount of space the stove will take up in a room should be considered, and in general a location that will take up the least amount of space is desired. The size of the stove, and it's clearance from combustible material requirements will dictate how much of a "footprint" the stove will have on the room. |
CostWhere you decide to have your wood stove installed will influence the cost of the installation. Example: If you have a two storey home with a basement, and install the stove in the basement, the cost of the venting and installation will be greater in comparrison to installing the stove on the upper level - cost of venting components and labour.

Suitability
A stove may function better in a different room, but if you won't make use of it in that location, other rooms should be considered.
